The painful situation our country has gone through in recent days has not been a secret for people, where several Colombians who, regardless of social or economic differences, have come together under the same purpose of preventing a tax reform to finance state debts caused by the pandemic, which triggered many expenses but low income for many.
This reform did not receive any support from the Colombian people and the only thing it achieved was a lot of disagreement and large march in all the cities of the country, where most of the protests have turned violent and have caused innumerable damage in the cities, stealing shops of merchants, abuse of force from the police and that it has also reached almost 27 deaths of protesters, although different human rights organizations affirm that there are many more. In addition, the situation is further aggravated by the context in which we still find ourselves, the pandemic that has left 78,000 dead in the country and the third wave of infections in which we find now, which will probably cause an increase in infected by all the people who have been on the streets.
And from myself, I feel a lot of emotional and mental pain to see this situation, where social networks are full of blood, murders and a lot of police fury, of institutions that are supposed to protect us, but these days they have shown a very violent face where they abuse of the power they have and commit atrocities, it is also true that they are not the only one culpable for so much violence, because there are many citizens who have not marched peacefully, who have stolen, for example pig farms, and it hurts to see how we harm each other.
However, the discontent of this whole situation and the inequality that this tax reform would cause is so bigger, that Colombians have not been afraid to go out and march, exercise their rights and take all these risks such as getting infected or losing their life. Because we are tired of the country conflict situations, economic recessions and that everything always falling into the hands of the middle class, which are trying to survive with the little they have. This is why we have raised our voice, because the need for a tax reform exists, but one that is justice, which is financed mainly by the richest people and large companies.
From this moment we have a great reflection and that is that we have a great challenge in the country to improve our institutions and help with social class inequality, but above all, to start with a personal change to achieve a change for all like Gandhi says in his famous phrases.
